Here we review all of the major UK providers of Over 50 Life Insurance to see which gives the best free gift.  Whilst we wouldn’t suggest that you select your life insurance policy based solely on the free gift it is worth knowing where the best gifts are available.  Below is a simple comparison showing their free gift and when their offers expire.  We also show you what to watch out for in their terms and conditions as some make claiming your gift a lot harder than others – be warned.

If you want to compare the product features and prices then check out our comparison service.

£85 Free Gift – No Expiry Date

SunLife is by far the most well known Over 50 Life Insurance brand and for good reason, it current sells more Over 50 Plans than all of the competition put together – that’s why they can say they are the most trusted over 50s insurer.

There gift card offer is typically one of the best around.  The gift comes as a Love to Shop gift card which you can spend at over 150 shops including major brands like Marks & Spencer, Argos, Boots, Iceland.  Check out the Love 2 Shop web site for the full list of where you can spend their gift cards.

SunLife’s free gift things to know

  • SunLife’s gift Terms & Conditions are surprisingly simple
  • The gift is sent auotmatically once you have paid 3 months premiums
  • They reserve the right to withdraw or change their gift offer at anytime
  • Watch out for offer close dates as they regularly change their gift
  • You get a gift every time you buy a policy

No Free Gift – No Expiry Date

Post Office is another well known and trusted brand.  Interestingly the Post Office aren’t the insurer behind their Over 50s Life Insurance.  Instead they put their brand on a product that is actually provided by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Ltd.  This can be a bit confusing as Royal London offer a much better featured and priced product themselves directly from their web site.  Clearly the Post Office need to make money so that must be why their Over 50s Life Insurance is so much more expensive than if you buy direct from Royal London.

The Post Office offers an Argos gift card which can be used in store or online – but clearly only at Argos.

Post Office free gift things to know

  • Gift offer expires 30 June 2019
  • Post office’s terms and conditions are pretty simple
  • The gift is sent automatically once you have paid six months premium

Our view

Your gift from the Post Office is sent to you automatically within 28 days of your sixth payment.  No logging in, no barriers, top marks again here for the Post Office Over 50 Life insurance free gift offer.

£85 Free Gift – Expires 31 August 2019

Royal London is the largest mutual insurer in the UK.  A mutual means that any profits that the business makes are returned to its members.  This can be a good thing but the amounts being returned to Over 50s Life Insurance customers are unlikely to make a substantial difference to your choice.

Royal London change their gift offering reasonably often fluctuating from no gift at all to around £100.  Their current gift is a choice of Marks & Spencer, Argos or Amazon gift cards – you can only choose one.  Unlike some of the other insurers there seem to be some unnecessary barriers (terms and conditions) to getting your gift – so watch out for these or you might end up not qualifying for your gift !

Royal London free gift things to know

  • You only get one gift per person, if you buy a second plan you get nothing
  • You can only get two gifts per household
  • You have to pay six monthly premiums before you qualify for a gift
  • If you give them your email they contact you after your sixth payment.  They give you 90 days to make your choice.  If you don’t make a choice within 90 days then you are no longer eligible for your gift.
  • If you don’t give them your email then you can choose your gift when you buy or by calling them after you have made six payments.  Either way you still then have to redeem a gift code through an online portal in order to get your gift card
  • Each of the Marks & Spencer, Argos and Amazon gift cards then have their own terms and conditions to watch out for

Our view

We like to think that when a gift is offered by an insurer that you automatically get the gift you choose sent to you once you’ve fulfilled your end of the bargain.  Royal London seem to have placed a whole bunch of hurdles for you to jump to get your gift which we don’t like.  If you go with them then make sure you check your spam folder and put a reminder in your diary as their email could end up being treated as spam so you might not see it on time to claim.

£85 + Free Will – Expires 31 August 2019

Legal and General have a very solid Over 50 Life Insurance product that is well featured and well priced for Non-smokers.  For those that smoke then you are likely to get a better price from another provider that doesn’t differentiate smoker and non-smoker pricing check out our comparison page.

Legal and General are also offering a Free Will as well as the £100 gift card from either Marks & Spencer or Amazon.  The Will is provided by FareWill and is an online subscription service that takes you through the Will writing process by asking you a bunch of questions. This looks like good value but there is always a sting in the tail for anything free and Free Will offers are just the same.  Typically the free part is just a simple will for you if you have a simple estate.  If you want a mirror will for a spouse or anything out of the norm then you will likely pay extra for this – heading pricing on their web site suggests £50 extra for a simple mirror Will for your spouse – they have to make money somewhere as Legal and General won’t be paying them anything for this service.

Legal and General free gift things to know

  • Only available if you buy a Legal and General Over 50s Fixed Life Insurance Plan
  • You can claim your gift card after you have made six payments but must claim it within 12 months of taking out the policy
  • You don’t get a gift if you’ve had a Legal and General Plan and cancelled it in the last 18 months

Our view

We like the Free Will and the fact that it gives you 12 months subscription to the FareWill service so you have plenty of time to think your Will through.  Be careful about extra costs that FareWill charge if you want anything other than a really simple Will – their charges will be clear on their web site.  In terms of the free gift then it is disappointing to see Legal and General require you to claim thew gift after six monthly payments rather than sending it automatically.  So make sure you put a diary note to claim your gift if you take out a Legal and General over 50 plan.

14,000 Nectar Points (worth £70) – No Expiry Date

Sainsbury’s Bank don’t have their own Over 50s Life Insurance policy but instead sell one from Legal and General.  It’s a good product but if your’e a smoker then we suggest you look elsewhere for better rates.  Sainsbury’s give you 14,000 nectar points (worth £70) and also you get double nectar points on your Sainsbury’s shopping and fuel whilst you have your policy – which sounds like a good deal and could potentially add up over time.

Sainsbury’s Bank free gift things to know

  • The Nectar points are automatically added to your Nectar balance after you’ve paid five months premiums
  • You will need to have a nectar card of course !
  • Only two policies per 12 months get the Nectar points – you can buy more policies that get the points after 12 months

Our view

Great to see the Nectar points are added automatically to your balance.  The offer to double the points on all your future spends at Sainsbury’s including on fuel looks like a generous one that could add up over time – assuming they don’t withdraw it of course.

£100 Free Gift- Expires 18 July 2019

Churchill are yet another Over 50 Life Insurance provider that don’t have their own product but are selling the one from AIG.  As before the AIG product is well featured and pricing for non-smokers but if you are a smoker then you would do well to look elsewhere as they give smokers a much worse deal.

Details on the gift offer are fairly scant online but from what we can tell you get an e-gift code sent to you automatically after six months payments.  A choice letter explaining how to claim for e-gift card should arrive within 30 days of your sixth payment.  The gift code allows you to choose between a Amazon, Argos or Marks & Spencer gift card.  Typically with these you will have to log in and redeem the code and you will then be sent the gift card of your choice either electronically or via email.

Churchill free gift things to know

  • £100 e-gift card with a choice of Amazon, Love2Shop or Marks & Spencer
  • A ‘choice’ letter is sent to you after 6 months payments explaining how get your e-gift card
  • The gift is an e-gift that then allows you select which gift card you want which is then sent to you though the post or via email depending on your choice of gift card
  • You can’t get another gift if you have previously cancelled a policy

Our view

Good to see that the e-gift choice letter is sent automatically after six payments but a shame that there are then additional steps for the customer to take in order to get the card of their choice.  Some customers may not like the e-gift cards and might prefer a physical card they can carry with them.

£50 Free Gift – No Expiry

Shepherds Friendly only offer a £50 gift card.  The gift card is from Love2Shop which means that you can spend it at over 150 retailers and many of the well known high street brands including Argos, Marks & Spencer and even Iceland.

Churchill free gift things to know

  • £50 Love2Shop e-voucher code is sent to you automatically after you’ve paid six premiums
  • The code is sent by email so you will need to put a diary note to check your inbox as it might end up in your spam folder
  • If your an existing customer you don’t get the gift !

Our view

Good to see that the e-voucher is sent automatically after your sixth payment but a shame that Shepherds Friendly only rewards new Over 50 Life Insurance customers and not there existing loyal customers.

£75 Free Gift – No Expiry

British Seniors don’t provide their own Over 50s Life Insurance product but instead sell a version from AIG.  They offer a £75 Marks & Spencer gift card after you have paid just three premiums.   Only SunLife offer a gift after so few monthly premiums and British Seniors pip SunLife by offering to get their gift card to you just five days after your third payment which is by far the quickest.

Churchill free gift things to know

  • £75 Marks & Spencer gift card
  • Sent to you automatically after just three monthly payments
  • Gift cards are for new customers only!

Our view

British Seniors offer their gift quicker than all of the other providers.  They send it automatically just five days after your third payment is received by them.  A shame there is no gift choice but you can’t have everything.
